Spotted: 2014 BMW Alpina B4 Biturbo!
Legendary BMW tuner Alpina is about to expand its range with a brand new line, the B4, now that BMW’s 3-Series Coupe has been replaced by the 4-Series.
We now have the first spy shot of a prototype for this BMW Alpina B4 model, which we’re expecting to be launched on the market by the middle of next year, following an official debut at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show next March.
While it may look like an ordinary 2014 BMW 4-Series coupe, some signature Alpina elements reveal its true identity. The biggest giveaway are the quad-exhaust tips, which match the units on the 2013 BMW Alpina B3 Biturbo (based on the BMW 3-Series sedan).
The prototype, which is even marked as a “Werkstestwagen,” also wears Alpina’s popular multi-spoke wheels, measuring 20 inches across. The final giveaway are the blue-painted brake calipers, which even look to be marked with Alpina branding.
Like its latest B3 Biturbo, Alpina’s new B4 Biturbo will most likely come to market with a twin-turbocharged version of BMW’s 3.0-liter straight-six engine found in the 435i coupe. In stock form this engine rates at 300 horsepower and 300 pound-feet of torque, but with Alpina’s tuning expect output to be dialed up to 410 horsepower and 442 pound-feet of torque.
That should see the B4 Biturbo sprint to 60 mph from rest in around 4.0 seconds and reach a top speed of close to 190 mph.
Other performance modifications should include discrete changes to the bumpers, adjustable suspension and a tweaked version of the ZF eight-speed automatic fitted to the regular 4-Series range. An all-wheel-drive B4 Biturbo should also be launched further down the track in addition to a successor to the previous B3 GT3 race car.

BMW adds standard connectivity features!
BMW of North America is adding features to its ConnectedDrive infotainment system as standard equipment on most 2014 vehicles.
BMW Assist with the eCall enhanced collision notification system has been made standard on all but the X6 crossover and some 3-series hybrid models. It had been a $650/four-year option, said Eric Sargent, ConnectedDrive manager for BMW of North America.
If an airbag inflates during a crash, eCall notifies the BMW Assist center. The vehicle transfers data on the accident location, number of impacts -- sensors can tell if the vehicle was hit multiple times -- whether the vehicle flipped over and whether the driver and passengers were wearing seat belts, Sargent said.
The system analyzes crash data for the likelihood of severe injury and sends the data to emergency medical responders, said BMW spokesman Dave Buchko.
"They could start doing things like line up the trauma center or have a helicopter standing by," Buchko said. "It is critical to save minutes in that first 'golden hour' -- what the medical industry calls it. After that hour the potential success of any treatment begins to reduce dramatically."
BMW Assist includes TeleService, which monitors the vehicle to determine when maintenance is required. The system sends data to the customer's BMW dealership, which calls to make a service appointment. BMW Assist is transferable to new owners for 10 years.
Other standard features include a new touch pad on the iDrive controller that is used for navigation, communications and entertainment. The touch pad is standard on all vehicles except the X3 crossover and the 6-series coupe and convertible.
Owners of the iPhone with the iOS 6 operating system can pair the phone to the vehicle with Bluetooth and use Apple's Siri Eyes Free or Samsung's S Voice applications. Responses are given via the vehicle's sound system. Music libraries on an Apple iPhone or iPod touch can be accessed via Bluetooth and no longer require a cable.
BMW's concierge service has been made standard on all V-8 and V-12 6- and 7-series cars or as a stand-alone upgrade on most 2014 nameplates. The service costs $100 for one year or $250 for three years

BMW says Siri will be on board all of its 2014 cars!
A year after announcing it had signed on as a future partner of Apple’s Siri EyesFree program, BMW is making good on its word. This week the automaker said that the in-car voice-control mode for iPhone will be a standard feature for its 2014 models, which are set to arrive later this year.
The feature will be part of BMW’s iDrive car software. For those worried about the car becoming yet another place where we have to pick sides in the platform wars: BMW isn’t playing favorites — at least when it comes to the Apple/Samsung battle for global mobile supremacy. The iDrive software will come equipped with both Siri and Samsung’s S-Voice, its own version of voice control software.
With the latest update to BMW iDrive, both Apple Siri and Samsung SVoice can be accessed through the vehicle’s voice command controls. With a paired device, pressing and holding the steering wheel voice command button will engage the device’s voice access. Pressing the steering wheel voice button without holding it will continue to access the vehicle’s voice command functions.

BMW CEO Tells Germans to Set Aside Angst to Go Electric!
Bayerische Motoren Werke AG (BMW) Chief Executive Officer Norbert Reithofer told his fellow Germans to set aside their infamous fear of the unknown and embrace electric-vehicle technology.
“Germany is respected and admired the world over for its engineering expertise and powers of innovation, but ‘German angst’ is also a concept the rest of the world is familiar with,” Reithofer said today in Munich. “We like to engage in long and fearful discussions because we Germans tend to see more problems than opportunities, and it is no different with electro-mobility.”
BMW aims to get its first electric vehicle -- the i3 city car, which will go on sale later this year -- off to a good start even as demand for battery-powered cars has disappointed because of cost and concerns about their range. The car is key for BMW’s image as the world’s largest luxury-car maker.
To counter electric-car concerns, BMW yesterday started a global marketing campaign to promote its “i” subbrand through print and Internet ads and a series of nine online videos. The Munich-based manufacturer will also offer the i3 with an auxiliary engine that kicks in if the battery runs out of power. The range extender can allow the car to drive over 300 kilometers before needing to recharge, more than double the normal distance on the battery alone.
“After the hype, we’re now in a phase of disenchantment on electric mobility,” said Stefan Bratzel, director of the Center of Automotive Management at the University of Applied Sciences in Bergisch Gladbach, Germany. “In Germany, that’s a good thing because you look at things more pragmatically.”
He estimates that battery-driven cars will account for just 2 percent to 3 percent of the global car market in 2020, while hybrid vehicles account for about 12 percent.
BMW, which was holding its annual shareholders meeting today in Munich, stuck to its goal of setting a sales record for the third consecutive year with the 4-Series coupe set to help offset a slump in Europe.
The share rose as much as 2 percent to 73.49 euros and were up 1.5 percent at 3:12 p.m. in Frankfurt trading. The stock has been essentially unchanged this year, keeping the company’s valuation at 47 billion euros ($61 billion).
BMW forecasts that rising demand in China and the U.S. and 11 new models in 2013, including the i3 and coupe-like 3-Series GT, will ward off the effects of the sovereign-debt crisis on Europe’s car market, which is sliding to a 20-year low.
In an effort to maintain its edge, BMW will roll out 25 new models by the end of next year, with 10 of them having no predecessor.

BMW and SOLARWATT team up for solar carport system!
The latest collaboration is part of a wider push by the German automotive giant to ensure owners of its upcoming i3 and i8 electric vehicles have ample charging options open to them. BMW has already established partnerships with Naturstrom, Schneider Electric and The Mobility House, and this new deal will give EV buyers the opportunity to purchase SOLARWATT's Carport System alongside a BMW i vehicle, or separately over the internet.
The system utilizes glass-glass PV modules – which the company cites as offering an increased lifespan and durability, compared to glass-foil modules – to provide solar-based battery charging for BMW EVs, as well as micro power generation for the household.
“This is the next step in the BMW i 360-degree package for customer-friendly electric mobility,” enthused Marcus Krieg, head of BMW’s 360-degree ELECTRIC project. “With SOLARWATT, we are delighted to be working with a premium partner for customized solar solutions who will cater to our customers’ high standards of quality and style.”

BMW and Paris Photo celebrate the tenth anniversary of their partnership with Andy Warhol’s 1979 BMW Art Car!
Since 1975, prominent artists from throughout the world have designed BMW automobiles of their times, all making extremely different artistic statements. The seventeen exhibits created for the Art Car Collection until now include works by well-known artists such as Frank Stella, Roy Lichtenstein, Robert Rauschenberg, David Hockney, Jenny Holzer, Olafur Eliasson and Jeff Koons. The Art Cars reflect the cultural and historical development of art, design, and technology and have been presented by major museums around the world, including the Guggenheim and the Louvre.
BMW will also present a mini series of Burlesque Style Photos with the 6 Series Gran Coupe by internationally renowned German photographer Uwe Düttmann. Four photos showcasing the 650i Gran Coupe in a retro setting celebrate film noir as well as the extraordinary sensuality of the best of burlesque vis-à -vis the high-tech design of one of the most advanced automobiles of our time.
Two years ago at a Hollywood studio and a private movie set outside of Los Angeles, BMW realized its idea of showcasing the 650i Gran Coupé in this unique manner. As befits the character of the shoot, 15 different photographs inside and outside the Gran Coupé present the two models acting out signature burlesque poses. The pictures will be presented within an environment paying tribute to their origins. Returning back home to LA, they are exhibited at the fair for the very first time.
“BMW is pleased to be involved in the inaugural Paris Photo LA,” said Ludwig Willisch, President and CEO, BMW of North America. “We are particularly looking forward to bringing out Andy Warhol art car and debuting our new photos.”
BMW and Paris Photo celebrate the tenth anniversary of their partnership. As it has in Paris, BMW will provide VIP shuttle service during Paris Photo Los Angeles. For many years, the BMW Group has worked together with great photographers from Bettina Rheims and Bryan Adams to Karl Lagerfeld. The company has been involved in the arts for over four decades with hundreds of initiatives worldwide. In 2005, at the opening of Zaha Hadid’s BMW Leipzig plant, BMW donated its unique collection of commissioned photographs by Thomas Demand, Wolfgang Tillmans, Rineke Dijkstra, Candida Höfer and Thomas Struth, among others, to the Leipzig Museum of Fine Arts.
When it comes to promoting young outstanding photographers, among many other international cooperations, BMW has been active in providing scholarships for international artists in Germany as well as France, where residences have been set up at the Musée Nicéphore Niépce. In addition, BMW for many years has been engaged with Les Recontres Arles, the acclaimed summer photography festival. As a long-term partner of Art Basel, Art Basel Hong Kong, Art Basel Miami Beach, Frieze London and New York as well as Tefaf Maastricht an many other fairs worldwide, BMW has taken in active part of furthering the visibility and innovative spirit of photography as an established form of artistic expression. Whenever possible, the company has complied with artist’s request to allow for photo shootings at our plants around the world. In 2014, the overall yearly theme of the BMW Museum will be “Photography.”

BMW Launches the "Electronaut Effect," a New Digital Tool Offering Drivers Real-Life Data on BMW ActiveE Driving Performance and Benefits!
BMW launched the Electronaut Effect, a new digital tool that gives consumers access to key aggregated data about the range, cost savings and positive environmental impact that actual BMW ActiveE drivers – called “Electronauts” – are experiencing across the country. This unfiltered information, updated weekly, will help inform consumers’ decision about purchasing an electric vehicle.
The Electronaut Effect at www.bmwusa.com/ElectronautEffect features aggregate car data for the 700 BMW ActiveEs – the first fully-electric BMWs – and their drivers, participating in the BMW ActiveE Field Trial that began January 2012. This streamlined data is presented in three basic categories: Range (i.e., most miles driven in one day), Savings (i.e., total money saved), and Environment (i.e., gallons of gas not used). As of today, Electronauts have driven approximately 6.1 million miles; the most miles driven in one day by a single Electronaut was 367.7. These ActiveE drivers have already saved more than $740,000 collectively by driving the all-electric cars (calculated by subtracting the money they spent on charging, from the amount they did not spend on gas). Together, they have saved well over 275,000 gallons of gas. “The Electronaut Effect is an exciting tool because it offers consumers unvarnished, hard data on the driving performance of our fleet of ActiveE vehicles, providing a very accurate picture of the BMW electric vehicle experience and the benefits of all-electric driving,” said Jacob Harb, head of Electric Vehicle Operations and Strategy, BMW of North America. “This is an important, new resource to help drivers considering an electric vehicle purchase make informed decisions.” The 700 Electronauts, meanwhile, will have access to a related tool, available at www.BMWActivateTheFuture.com that offers a detailed, more in-depth look at data specific to their BMW ActiveE, as well as to the entire fleet. Electronauts can see the average number of times he or she charges their ActiveE per day, average remaining charge at the end of the day, and their personal reduction in driving-related carbon footprint. Electronauts may also choose to opt into a “Current Standings” section that lets them compare select statistics to those of other Electronauts. They can view the top 25 Electronauts in the U.S. for select data points and can see their current ranks for these statistics. Or they can compare West Coast vs. East Coast driving data, such as total miles driven by coast.Courtesy of BMW Newsroom

2014 BMW 328d Making Debut at New York Auto Show!

Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE
Debuting at the 2013 New York International Auto Show is the new 2014 BMW 328d, a diesel variant of the 328i sedan. It will join the U.S. lineup, strengthening BMW’s position as one of the most efficient automakers. Powered by a TwinPower Turbo four-cylinder engine, the new 328d delivers 180 horsepower, which BMW says will get it from 0 to 60 mph in 7.2 seconds.
Not only is this car fast, it’s fuel-efficient, with gas mileage possibly exceeding 40 mpg; official U.S. EPA estimates won’t be available until it is closer to the debut. With the great performance seen in the 3 Series combined with the fuel efficiency of a diesel engine, the new 2014 BMW 328d has become a benchmark in its class.
